chapter 2 EXPLORATION

SUMMARY

JACQUES COUSTEAU

BACKGROUND:
·         Born :June 11.1910
·         Place of born: Saint de-Cubzac, France
·         Occupation: French oceanographer, inventor , photographer,
                    And environmentalist.
·         Family:
-      Parents: Daniel and Elizabeth Cousteau
-      Wife    : Simone Melchior
-      Son      : Jean-Michel and Phillipe


CHILDHOOD:
·         Jacques Cousteau was a very sick kids.
·         Has a deep passionate towards the sea.
·         At the age of four(4) he started to learn swimming.
·         He also curious about machine.
·         At the age of 13, he bought a movie camera and take it apart just to see how it work.

TEENAGERS ERA:
·         He’s not very interested in school.
·         Jacques Cousteau got expelled from school because he’s breaking one of the school window.
·         After that, he was sent to a boarding school in Alsace.
·         In 1930, he entry Ecole Navale( Naval academy) at Brest.
·         He join the French Navy as a gunnery officer.
·         He still bringing his curiosity by taking roll and roll of exotic films.

LIFE CHALLENGE:
·         In 1933, he suffered a major accident that nearly cost his life.
·         To regain his health, he swimming daily in the Mediterranean while experimented the watertight goggles to see the underwater.

AT THE AGE OF 27
·         In 1937, he married Simone Melchior.
·         and they had two(2) son, Jean-Michel and Phillipe.
·         The invented of compressed air cylinder helped Jacques to experiment various item to stay underwater.
·         He also invent a waterproof cover for the camera.

WORLD WAR 11
·         He joined the French Resistance movement, spying on the armed force of Hitler’s ally, Italy.
·         The  French government awarded him  the Legion d ’Honneur, the highest honour given to a civilian.
·         He continued to search for a breathing apparatus.
·         In 1943,he met Emile Gagnan( French engineer)
·         They invent a machine called “aqua lung”
·         In June 1943, tested the aqua lung by diving down to 60 ft.
·         Scuba diving came into being.

GOLDEN ERA BEGAN
·         In 1948, he became a president of the French Oceanographic campaigns.
·         In 1950, he purchased a ship ( Calypso) to further his explorations.
·         Carrier :
-He wrote a first book “The Silent World”.
-In 1955, the French government and National Geographic sponsored his
  voyage to the red sea and Indian Ocean.
     -In 1956, shot documentary film “The silent World”
     -He won a academy award for shot a spectacular sequences of shark feeding.
     - In 1956,he retired as a captain at French Navy and became a director of  
       the Oceanographic Institute at Monaco.

DIVINE GUIDANCE
·         He set out three expeditions called Conshelf I, II and III.
·         In 1966, he won an academy award from the film “World Without Sun”.
·         TV serial “The undersea World of Jacques Cousteau”.
·         He wrote more book in 1963 ‘The Living Sea’ , in 1975 ‘ Dolphins’ and Jacques Cousteau: The Ocean World in 1985.
·         In 1974, he started Cousteau society to conserve ocean life.
·         In 1985, he receive an award the medal of freedom by US president Reagan.

LAST PART OF J.C
·         In January 11, 1996 the calypso hit a barge and sank in Singapore harbour.
·         Tried to build a Calypso II.
·         However, he died on June 25, 1997.
·         But, he leave a treasure which is the knowledge about the undersea world.
